What are you doing for Earth Day?

Happy Earth Day 2013, and welcome to my first regular NLT blog post. Earth Day has, over the past 20 years, become for me a time of both reaching out and reaching in. The issues we face - as a community, a state, a nation, a world – are huge and it’s absolutely essential that we solve them, but to sustain the energy required, we must remember the words of Edward Abbey: “Do not burn yourselves out.”
So, as I make my Earth Day resolutions (yes, really, even though I’m blessed with this day job) I include reaching out (understand better Nevada Land Trust’s opportunities to address climate change through land and water conservation, support my kids’ initiative to rally classmates around stopping the horror of shark finning, and convert the 55-gallon drum in my back yard to the new compost bin (while I’m at it, add a DIY rain barrel or two), and, um, starting the blog), and I try to remember to reach in, too. To include some things that directly sustain me (more hiking, more swimming in Tahoe, more sleep, more writing, more hugs, less coffee).
I’m curious – do you make resolutions for Earth Day? What actions are you taking this year? How do you sustain your own energy and efforts to make a difference for our world? I’d love to hear from you!
